How to Get Ungated on Amazon: A Guide for Wholesale Sellers

To get ungated on Amazon, you check whether a product needs approval, buy it from a legitimate wholesale source, and submit an Apply to Sell request with the documents Amazon asks for, usually invoices. Amazon reviews each request and makes the final decision.

Ungating is one of the first hurdles for new Amazon wholesale sellers. This guide explains how gating works, how the invoice route works and what to do at each step.

Quick answer: Search the product in Seller Central. If it says approval is required, click “Apply to sell” and follow the steps. For most wholesale products, that means submitting invoices from a manufacturer or distributor that match your business details. Approval is never guaranteed.

What “Gated” Means on Amazon

A gated product is one Amazon will not let you list until you are approved. Amazon gates products to protect buyers and brands from counterfeits, unsafe goods and poor seller performance.

Gating happens at three levels:

  • Category gating: a whole category or subcategory needs approval.
  • Brand gating: a brand restricts who can sell its products.
  • Product (ASIN) gating: one listing needs approval even if others from the brand do not.

Gating is also account-specific. Two sellers can see different results for the same product. The difference is explained in brand gating vs category gating.

Step 1: Check Whether the Product Is Gated

Before you buy, search the product in Seller Central (Catalog > Add Products). If you see “Listing limitations apply” or an “Apply to sell” button, the product needs approval for your account. If there is no message, you can list it.

Check every product on your list, not just the brand. Gating can differ from one product to the next.

Step 2: Buy From a Legitimate Wholesale Source

Amazon uses invoices to see where your inventory comes from. That means the source matters:

  • Buy from the manufacturer or a wholesale distributor, not a retail store.
  • Make sure the supplier is a real business with an address, phone number and website. Our guide to how to vet wholesale suppliers explains what to check.
  • Buy enough units. Amazon may ask to see a minimum quantity on your invoice.

Step 3: Get an Invoice That Meets Amazon’s Requirements

This is where most requests succeed or fail. Amazon usually wants an invoice that is recent, shows the supplier’s full contact details, shows your business name and address exactly as they appear in Seller Central, and lists the products and quantities.

The full checklist is in Amazon invoice requirements for ungating.

Step 4: Submit Your Apply to Sell Request

  1. Click “Apply to sell” next to the product.
  2. Read the requirements shown. They differ by category and brand.
  3. Upload your invoice as an unedited file.
  4. Add any other documents Amazon asks for.
  5. Submit and watch your email and Seller Central for follow-up questions.

Some requests are approved instantly, others take days. If Amazon asks for more information, reply quickly and send exactly what it asks for.

How to Get Ungated in a Brand on Amazon

Brand approval works the same way, but some brands set stricter rules. Amazon may ask for an invoice from the brand or one of its authorized distributors, or for a letter of authorization (LOA) from the brand.

Before you buy a brand for ungating, ask your supplier whether it has sold that brand to sellers who were approved.

Category Guides

Each category has its own quirks:

If Your Request Is Denied

A denial is common and usually fixable. The most frequent causes are a name or address mismatch, an old invoice or too few units. See ungating request denied for a checklist before you reapply.

Keep Your Invoices After You Are Approved

Your invoices keep working after approval. If a buyer or brand ever questions whether your products are genuine, Amazon will ask for proof of where they came from. Read authenticity complaints and wholesale invoices.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get ungated on Amazon with invoices?

Buy the product from a wholesale supplier, make sure the invoice shows your exact Seller Central name and address and the supplier’s details, then upload it through Apply to Sell.

Does ungating mean I can sell the brand?

Ungating means Amazon has approved your account to list that product, category or brand. It does not give you rights from the brand itself. Some brands still restrict sales through their own policies, so check with your supplier.

How long does ungating take?

Some approvals are instant. Others take several days, especially if Amazon asks for more documents.

Can I get ungated without buying anything?

Some products and categories are auto-approved for certain accounts. When approval is not automatic, Amazon usually asks for invoices, so a purchase is required.
