Category gating means you need approval to sell anything in a category or subcategory. Brand gating means you need approval to sell a specific brand, whatever its category. Some products are gated on their own too. You can check all three for your account in Seller Central before you buy.
Quick answer: Category gating restricts a whole category, brand gating restricts one brand, and product (ASIN) gating restricts one listing. Search the product in Seller Central: if you see “Apply to sell,” it is gated for your account.
The Three Types of Gating
| Type | What is restricted | Example of what you might see |
|---|---|---|
| Category gating | A whole category or subcategory | You cannot list any product in a restricted subcategory |
| Brand gating | Every product from one brand | You can sell other products in the category, but not this brand |
| Product (ASIN) gating | One listing | You can sell most of a brand’s products, but not this one |
The three can overlap. A product can sit in an open category but belong to a gated brand, or be gated on its own.
What Does “Approval Required” Mean on Amazon?
“Approval required” (or “Listing limitations apply”) means your account is not yet allowed to list that product. It does not mean the product is banned. It means you need to apply and meet Amazon’s requirements first.
Gating is account-specific. Newer accounts often see more restrictions, and established accounts with good performance may be auto-approved for some products.
How to Check if a Product Is Gated on Amazon
- In Seller Central, go to Catalog > Add Products.
- Search by product name, UPC or ASIN.
- Look at the result next to the product.
- Check every product on your wholesale order, not just the brand.
What the result means:
- No message: you can list it.
- “Apply to sell”: approval is required for your account.
- A note about condition: the restriction may cover only certain conditions, such as used.
You can also check from the Amazon Seller app by scanning a barcode.
Why It Matters Before You Buy Wholesale
If you buy inventory you cannot list, your money is stuck. Checking first lets you:
- skip products you cannot get approved for
- plan which products to buy for ungating, and in what quantity
- ask your supplier the right questions about invoices
If a product is gated, your next step is the invoice. See Amazon invoice requirements for ungating for what it needs to show.
Category Examples
Grocery, some health products and beauty topicals are common examples of products that need approval. Each has its own rules: start with how to get ungated in grocery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is brand gating stricter than category gating?
It often is. Category approval usually needs invoices and account standing. Some brands ask for invoices from the brand or its authorized distributors, or a letter of authorization.
Can a product be gated for me but not for another seller?
Yes. Gating depends on your account, including its age and performance.
Does approval for a category approve every brand in it?
No. Brand and product restrictions can still apply inside an approved category.
