Amazon Poly Bag Requirements and Suffocation Warnings

Amazon requires some products to be sealed in a poly bag before they go to FBA, to keep them clean, protected and together. The bag must be clear, strong enough not to tear, sealed, and printed with a suffocation warning if its opening is large.

Quick answer: Use a clear bag at least 1.5 mil thick, seal it, make sure the FNSKU scans through it or is on the outside, and add a suffocation warning when the bag opening is 5 inches or more. Bag products that are loose, soft, dusty or could leak.

Which Products Need Poly Bagging?

  • Clothing, fabric and other soft items
  • Products in boxes that could open, or with loose parts
  • Powders, pellets and granular products
  • Products that could get dusty or dirty in storage
  • Some liquids, together with leak-proof packaging

Seller Central shows the prep guidance for each product when you create a shipment. Check it before you buy, because bagging adds time and cost.

Amazon Poly Bag Requirements

Amazon’s packaging rules generally ask that poly bags:

  • are transparent, so the product can be seen
  • are at least 1.5 mil thick
  • are sealed completely, for example with tape or a self-seal strip
  • do not stick out more than a few inches past the product
  • let the barcode scan, or carry the FNSKU label on the outside

Check Amazon’s packaging and prep requirements for the current list.

Suffocation Warning Label Amazon Rules

Amazon requires a suffocation warning on poly bags with an opening of 5 inches or more. The warning can be printed on the bag or added as a sticker, and its minimum font size depends on the bag’s size (ComplianceGate). A typical warning reads:

“Warning: To avoid danger of suffocation, keep this plastic bag away from babies and children. Do not use this bag in cribs, beds, carriages or playpens. This bag is not a toy.”

Buying pre-printed warning bags is the simplest way to stay compliant.

Common Bagging Mistakes

  • Using cloudy bags that hide the barcode
  • Leaving bags unsealed
  • Forgetting the suffocation warning on large bags
  • Putting two different products in one bag

Mistakes like these can delay receiving or add costs. Learn how to avoid unplanned prep fees. If you are bagging sets, see how to prep multipacks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use any plastic bag?

No. It needs to be clear, thick enough and sealed, with a warning if the opening is large.

Does the FNSKU go inside or outside the bag?

It must scan without opening the bag. Placing the label on the outside of the bag is the safest option.

Do all products need bagging?

No. Only products whose prep guidance calls for it, or that would be damaged or come apart without it.
